Seeking such seekers

Shams-a-Tabriz, Rumi’s guru, asked a man,”What are you doing?”

“I’m looking at the moon’s reflection in this lake,” replied the man.

“Why don’t you look directly at the sky? Are you so blind that you do not see the true object in all you contemplate?”

Shams’ reply had such an effect on the man that he requested Shams to make him his disciple.

“You do not have the strength to bear my company,” replied Shams.

The man replied that he was strong enough. “Please accept me,” he said.

“OK, then bring a pitcher of wine, and we will drink together in the market.”

The man became afraid of what the people would think (drinking alcohol is considered a big sin in that part of the world). “I cannot do this,”, said the man.

Shams said, “You are too timid for me. You haven’t the strength to be among the intimate friends of God. I seek only those who those who REALLY want to reach the Truth.”

Those for whom becoming one with the One is the top priority in life.
